A plethora of what promise to be astounding talks are in line for IIMA students later this week. Three eminent speakers are all set to grace IIMA  – Mr. Alok Mittal of Cannan Partners, and Mr. Sunil Chainani (PGP 1978-80), Director, Fabindia Overseas Pvt. Ltd. These luminaries shall be succeeded by Mr. Neeraj Swaroop (PGP82) CEO, Standard Chartered, on the 7th of August. Given the varied backgrounds of the speakers, the audience of future managers is sure to gain a lot from these sessions on how to tackle challenges in their work and personal lives.
On the 23rd Mr. Alok Mittal will speak about private equity and describe the intricate functioning of a PE firm. He has substantial expertise in investments in cellphone, communciation internet and other digital media based companies. He has been leading Canaan’s Indian Operations since 2006. A successful and accomplished entrepreneur who founded the Indian Angel Network he also has extensive experience at Baring Private Equity Partners India. At Canaan he has been instrumental in carrying out some of the firm’s most acclaimed investments including the ones in BharatMatrimony and iYogi.
Mr. Atul Karwal, an IPS officer is visiting the campus following an invitation by the Entre Club under its “Offbeat Entrepreneur Series”. This session, to be held on 24 July would deal with Motivating Oneself in the Times of Crisis. He shall be delivering this talk with a special focus on budding entrepreneurs and their need for motivation. A Mt. Everest summiteer, his confidence in handling adverse situations is sure to rub off on the students. He also holds a black belt in Wing-Tsun, an oriental martial art form and is currently serving as Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic) of Ahmedabad.
Sunil Chainani would speak on “Challenges for growth with CSR – how Fabindia meets twin objectives” on the 27th of July. He is a PGP participant of the 1978-80 batch. He heads Fabindia, an indigenous cloth manufacturer and retailer, with over 85 stores in India and abroad. Fabindia is unique in its own way. It procures products from over 15000 craftsmen. A key part of the company’s objectives for the next 2-3 years is to try to create sustainable jobs for about 100000 people in rural India. With this backdrop Mr Sunil Chainani will speak on issues encountered on path of CSR, and how Fabindia brings a humane face to business.
To say that the banking industry has seen a lot lately would be an understatement. Mr. Neeraj Swaroop shall be addressing the audience on these and related matters on the 7th of August. This is an initiative under the course on Corporate Strategy/Strategic Management. He is CEO, Standard Chartered, since 2005. He has been with HDFC Bank for four years as head of consumer banking. Prior to that, he was with Bank of America for 8 years. He was a PGP student at IIMA during 1980-82.
IIMA would like to extend a warm welcome to these veterans of industry and management and hopes to continue this relationship far into the future.
